The Gales Pathways to STEM (GPS) program is part of the Lancaster City School District, and headquartered at Lancaster High School. The program was created through a partnership with the Fairfield County Educational Service Center and the PAST Foundation, with the intention of providing students with an integrated curriculum that is informed by real-world experiences.

The program is designed to serve over 100 students in grades 9 through 12. Students attend classes at the main campus of Lancaster High School, with upperclassmen also taking classes at the adjacent Ohio University-Lancaster campus. At any given time, you may see freshmen and sophomores immersed in demanding coursework or in rigorous projects, and juniors and seniors stepping up to integrate real-world skills with their education through our Engineering or Biomedical Science pathways. All GPS students engage in a personally relevant and academically rigorous curriculum. Applications are accepted for rising 9th grade students enrolled in the Lancaster City School District.

While STEM is the program's emphasis, students cover all subjects required by Ohio's state standards through an integrated, transdisciplinary approach to learning. Our vision is to provide a vibrant learning community designed to serve students who want a learning experience that prepares them for a connected world where math, science and technology are vitally important.

How Does GPS Work?

The Gales Pathways to STEM program is a 4-year comprehensive STEM course of study. Students apply to the program during their 8th grade year. An admissions committee then evaluates each candidate's application, along with teacher recommendations and  personal interviews, in order to determine which students are accepted. A limited number of students are accepted each year, and admissions is HIGHLY COMPETITIVE.

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but it is more than an acronym. While originally designed to encourage students to pursue careers in these areas, STEM education has evolved into a unique approach to teaching and learning that fosters creativity and innovative thinking in all students.
The Lancaster High School GPS program is made possible through a partnership with the Fairfield County Educational Service Center, the PAST Foundation, & the Project FAST design team process.
